Broken Bridges – Stephen Humphreys in Ukraine

The University of Alabama Gallery is pleased to present Broken Bridges – Stephen Humphreys in Ukraine, an exhibition of photographs by Stephen Humphreys, from August 4 through September 15, 2023, with a First Friday reception on September 1 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., in the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center, during downtown Tuscaloosa’s First Friday Art Walk.

Birmingham native Stephen Humphreys presents a collection of digital color photographs that he took over the last several months while living in Ukraine. After the Battle of Irpin, a turning point in the Kyiv offensive during the Russian invasion, Humphreys decided to go to Ukraine, “to do what I could do,” as he wrote in a recent op-ed column. Since then, Humphreys, an attorney, has worked on war crimes investigations, volunteered in training Ukrainian armed forces, and is now teaching law and history at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. During this time, he has also been taking high-resolution digital photographs, documenting the people, cities, and landscape of Ukraine as they are now, war-torn yet bonded together and resilient amidst incredible destruction.

UA Gallery director Daniel White said, “We are bringing this exhibition to our community to provide an inside look at Ukraine’s plight beyond the headlines. It is a timely and important topic and we are fortunate as a gallery that Stephen Humphreys is directly sharing what he is seeing unfiltered with us.”

Stephen Humphreys has practiced law for twenty-five years in Georgia and Alabama and been involved in local and regional media as a journalist, editor, and owner. He is also an art collector as well as a photographer. Humphreys’ collections of Vietnamese and Cuban art have been shown in exhibitions at Troy University, the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur, and Vulcan Materials Gallery at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. He holds a law degree from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s degree in literature from Princeton University.
